For instance, the current oil spill is general news since it impacted so many countries, or maybe the past slow-down, since it affected more than half of the lands in the whole world. If you guess that, then you are correct with what you think about general news.
For a much better meaning, general news is a kind of news that is composed for the general public. This means, everyone can relate to it. As an article writer, it is hard to write all-purpose news that is as you must study on subjects that not only people in a some area can relate to, but people all throughout the world can relate to. The two given above are clear, since a lot of countries are affected. However, it is not day by day that a bank mishandles its funds, or when an oil slick happens, threatening almost half of the population of the world’s marine life forms.
So, as an author who is tasked to write general news, you have to think carefully on what you are going to read, and you need to do widespread research first. This is because your readers is the entire world, there is no room for mistake, and if you cause one, or write anything that is untrue, then it will surely affect the newspaper that you are writing for.
On the whole, when writing news and answers, you need to be wary of two very simple items, your subject and relation to the whole world. So, whatever happened in Hawaii that isn’t something most important isn’t worthwhile for general news.
