Kitchen Island

April 16th, 2010

Kitchen island design has a lot of aspects to it than one might realize. There is the top itself to consider together with the base and the features it will need to include. Not to mention all the different colors and materials that may be mixed and matched to create one, making the previews available on the Internet  a nice place to start out with the design.

For the larger family or someone who does a lot of entertaining, a sink added into a kitchen island design may not be a bad idea. This allows food to be prepared in 2 places rather than simply one and will permit those preparing food at the island to stay there so as to rinse dishes off or add water to a recipe. This can also aid in keeping spilled water off the floor because folks will not want to travel across the space for water access.

Many of the islands in use these days have some type of electrical capability built in to them. This could be a counter top outlet for appliances or an outlet on the base for plugging in floor-cleaning machines such as vacuums and steam cleaners. When planning the island, be certain that the home has the potential to accommodate the addition of these outlets at the proper amperage to handle anything that will be plugged into them.

Small under-counter ice makers are another option which will be incorporated into a kitchen island design. These are excellent for those who entertain and when the refrigerator’s ice machine simply does not keep up with the volume. These are simple to put in and only require a minimal water supply and drain line.

The right kitchen island design is out there if you recognize where to look. The Net holds a wealth of information relating to all the materials and sizes of those islands. Take the time to look around at what others have in place and more concepts will come to mind.
